WASHINGTON, DC –The Coalition for Mercury-Free Drugs (CoMeD, Inc.) will be holding a news conference starting at 8:30 AM, Wednesday, August 26, 2009, at the Constitution Avenue Entrance to the U.S. Federal District Court for the District of Columbia. This news conference is scheduled just one hour before Judge Reggie B. Walton will hear oral arguments in a case CoMeD has filed against the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This hearing is being held in response to a CoMeD motion for a preliminary injunction to stop pregnant women from being given mercury-preserved flu vaccines.
This injunction asks the Court: (1) To stop the vaccination of pregnant women with any mercurypreserved flu vaccine, and (2) To stop the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from recommending the vaccination of any pregnant woman with a mercury-preserved flu shot.
Details of the filing will be available and the main plaintiff parties will be on hand, including Reverend Lisa K. Sykes, President of CoMeD.
This filing has made use of precedence established in the injunction issued regarding mandatory inoculation of the military for anthrax and has met all requirements for having standing to pursue this case and seek this preliminary injunction, including supportive declarations by the Women’s Division of the United Methodist Church. In support of CoMeD’s legal action, Harriett Jane Olson, Deputy General Secretary of Women’s Division of General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church will speak.
The CoMeD, Inc. is a 501(C)(3) not-for-profit group dedicated to reducing the mercury-exposure risks for the unborn, infants, children, adolescents and adults from all mercury-containing medical products to which they are, or may be, exposed.
